Copenhagen does cafés better than almost anywhere, and it does them with dogs in a way that still surprises people who’ve come from elsewhere. Of the 64 cafés we’ve checked in this city, 62 welcome dogs inside. Not on the terrace. Not if it’s quiet. Inside, under the table, while you have your coffee.

That’s the headline, and it’s genuinely unusual. But “welcome inside” still covers a range. Some of these places have a back room and a sofa and a bowl by the door. Some are two rooms wide and lovely and will not comfortably hold a Labrador on a Saturday morning. A few are happiest with a small dog, and say so.

So this is all 64, with what each is actually like once you’re through the door.

What “dogs welcome inside” means in a Copenhagen café

It usually means genuinely welcome. Danish cafés don’t tend to tolerate dogs so much as ignore them, which is better. Nobody will make a fuss of your dog, and nobody will look at you.

Space is the real variable, not permission. The question is almost never “are dogs allowed” — it’s “is there anywhere for a dog to be”. A snug café on Jægersborggade and a wide corner room in Østerbro both say yes, and only one of them works with a big dog at brunch.

Quiet hours help everywhere. Before ten on a weekday, most of these cafés are half empty and entirely relaxed. Between eleven and two at the weekend, several are a scrum. Same café, different afternoon.

Ask anyway. Not because you might be turned away, but because staff will usually point you at the table that works — the corner, the bench seat, the one away from the door.

Where to go, by what suits your dog

If you have a big dog, or one that needs to stretch out

Room to settle matters more than anything else. Lagoni in Østerbro is spacious and laid back. Ø.12 Vesterbro is roomy inside with outdoor seating as well. Salonen 222 in Østerbro has space for a curious dog, plus a water bowl and treats. Darcy’s Coffee on Rantzausgade is calm inside with soft corners to settle into. Goose Deli in Nordvest is relaxed, and the staff are happy to have dogs indoors. Dallas København on Victor Borges Plads has a generous outdoor area for sunny mornings.

If you have a small dog — and a few places prefer it

Three of these cafés are honest about their size, which we’d rather they were. Bonni in Nørrebro is cosy enough that it can only take small dogs, who are very welcome. Saftig Kaffe on Prinsesse Charlottes Gade is excellent and snug — best for calm, smaller dogs, with a few pavement seats that catch the sun. The Sixteen Twelve on Jægersborggade is a smaller space, better for small dogs inside, with outdoor tables that work well in summer.

If you want a bowl and a welcome

Coffee First — Vesterport has dog-friendly design down to the logo: water bowls, treats, sunny outdoor tables, five minutes from Central Station. P88 in Christianshavn keeps a water bowl out front with plenty of seats inside and out. Salonen 222 has both bowl and treats. Esso in Valby is the one where they’ll likely know your dog’s name — a lively corner, so keep them close if you sit outside.

If you want a walk either side of the coffee

Andersen & Maillard on Nørrebrogade sits directly across from Assistens Kirkegården — coffee roasted on site and some of the best croissants in the city. Atelier September, Orsa and Studio X Kitchen are all a short walk from Kongens Have, as is Ø.12 City Centre. Flindt & Ørsted is on the edge of Ørstedsparken. Cadence in Vesterbro is a short walk from Enghaveparken. Copenhagen Coffee Lab Østerbro is minutes from Kildevældsparken and Fælledparken. Ø.12 Østerbro has Østre Anlæg across the road. Lagoni sits between Fælledparken and the Lakes. Kær Kaffebar in Valby is about ten minutes from Søndermarken. Konsjös on Amager is steps from Kalvebod Fælled.

If you want water and air

LIDO on Vester Voldgade is light and calm and close to Langebro — a good pause before or after a harbour walk. P88 and Cafe Niko are both on the Christianshavn waterfront. Prolog — Papirøen sits in the COBE buildings on the water. Atelier September — Nordhavn is tucked into a quiet harbour square. Nachbar is by the canals at Engholmene. Coffee First — Gammel Kongevej and Orsa — Vesterbro both look out at the Lakes.

If you want to settle in for a while

Bastard Cafe has over 5,000 board games and is best for a calm dog — watch for stray pieces and snacks at low-table height. Egestrand Kaffe & Tehus in Nordvest has books and games and a quiet feel. The Laundromat Café in Østerbro pairs coffee with books. Cafe Bevar’s in Nørrebro runs from early morning to late night.

One small courtesy

LéLé in Østerbro welcomes dogs inside but not on the furniture — the vintage pieces are all for sale.

And when it’s busy

Mokkariet near Runddelen is a Nørrebro favourite and gets full. Dogs are welcome, but check with staff before settling in; they’re usually happy to make room.

The two that are outside only

Worth saying plainly, because a wasted trip in November is a real cost.

Cafe Bopa and Cafe Pixie, both on and just off Bopa Square in Østerbro, welcome dogs outside only. Both are good — Bopa is a lively local spot with brunch and burgers, Pixie is colourful and casual — and on Bopa Square in summer, outside is where you’d want to be anyway. In winter, plan differently.
